Just an hour's drive from Washington D.C. in northern Virginina, Bears Den is a well-kept secret! There's something for everyone at Bears Den and here is a sample.
- Hike the famous Appalachian Trail. Use Bears Den as a starting point to take a hike north or south.
- Have a picnic in the gazebo, the stone pavilion, at the rocksÂ… or find a secret spot under a shade tree.
- Stay the night in an impressive stone lodge, secluded cottage or primitive campground.
- Bicycle the backcountry mountain and valley roads or the nearby W&OD trail. Make a long weekend out of it. Day 1: bike from D.C. to Bears Den on the W& OD; Day 2: bike country road from Bears Den to Harpers Ferry (visit museums and stay at Sandy Hook Hostel); Day 3: Bike from Harpers Ferry to D.C. on the C & O Canal Towpath.
- Join us for, music night, or other special events.
- Take in a glorious sunset and panoramic view of the Shenandoah Valley from Bears Den Rock Overlook
- See the fall foliage in middle October. The best view is from Bears Den Rocks.
- Volunteer to work on the property or in the lodge.
- Have a field trip with your school or youth group. Discounts are available for youth groups.
- Bird watch. September 14-21 is the best time to catch a massive migration of birds of prey.
- Study ecology while meandering through the 66 acre piece of mountain upland wilderness. One mile south on the Appalachian Trail there is a pristine wetland habitat.
- Have a group retreat or party. Bears Den is well suited for small to medium size groups.
