A well kept secret of the D.C. metropolitan and Northern Virginia area, Bears Den is great spot for fun and relaxation. Fill your day with activities or simply rest by the grand fireplace and read a favorite book. Just an hour's drive from the big city, there's something for everyone at Bears Den. Here is a sample.

At Bears Den you can…
  • Hike the famous Appalachian Trail. Use Bears Den as a starting point to take a hike north or south.
  • Have a picnic in the gazebo or stone pavilion… or find a secret spot under a shade tree.
  • Stay the night in an impressive stone lodge, secluded cottage or primitive campground.
  • Bicycle the backcountry mountain and valley roads or the nearby W&OD trail. Make a long weekend out of it. Day 1: bike from D.C. to Bears Den on the W& OD; Day 2: bike country road from Bears Den to Harpers Ferry (visit museums and stay at Sandy Hook Hostel); Day 3: Bike from Harpers Ferry to D.C. on the C & O Canal Towpath.
  • Join us for, music night, or other special events.
  • Take in a glorious sunset and panoramic view of the Shenandoah Valley from Bears Den Rock Overlook
  • See the fall foliage in middle October. The best view is from Bears Den Rocks.
  • Volunteer to work on the property or in the lodge.
  • Have a field trip with your school or youth group. Discounts are available for youth groups.
  • Bird watch. September 14-21 is the best time to catch a massive migration of birds of prey.
  • Study ecology while meandering through the 66 acre piece of mountain upland wilderness. One mile south on the Appalachian Trail there is a pristine wetland habitat.
  • Get married.
  • Have a group retreat or party. Bears Den is well suited for small to medium size groups.
